UIL state tournament preview
The UIL boys basketball state tournament will tip off Thursday morning at the Frank Erwin Center on the campus of the University of Texas. The tournament will feature everything from returning state qualifiers to a team that hasn't made state in more than four decades.
Here are the preview capsules for each team competing this weekend. Additionally, here are the state-tournament pairings Thursday through Saturday.

Notable: Clarendon is making its first state appearance in 41 years. Led by a first-year coach in Lockhart, the Broncos are a defense-oriented team. Offensively, they are led by Johnny Gaines, Mike Crump and Chris Crump.
TENAHA TIGERS
Coach: Todd Bodden
Record: 27-9
Playoff run: d. Slocum, 51-42; d. Pineland West Sabine, 61-38; d. Cayuga, 75-74; d. Clarksville, 66-65
Notable: After a 0-2 start, Tenaha earned its second state-tournament berth in three years. The Tigers, a team playing without a senior on the roster, are paced by juniors Octavius Griffith and Reginald Davis.
EULA PIRATES
Coach: Josh Fostel
Record: 35-2
Playoff run: d. Munday, 66-52; d. Stamford, 55-45; d. Muenster, 55-44; d. Kerens, 53-51
Notable: Eula was down by as many 20 against Kerens but it fought back to score a huge victory. Eula only led in the game for 17 seconds. The Pirates operate well with its inside-outside tandem of seniors Kainon Irons and Jacob Archa
EVADALE REBELS

Notable: It seemed as though the longer Evadale stayed in the playoffs, the better the team got. The Rebels last advanced to state 10 years ago, and they're hoping to capitalize this year. Blaine Dunigan is a high-energy big man for Evadale.
CLASS A DIVISON II
PADUCAH DRAGONS
Coach: Jay Cantrell
Record: 27-6
Playoff run: d. Ropesville Ropes, 73-56; d. Ackerly Sands, 47-44; d. Happy, 64-38; d. Anton, 71-66 (2 OT)
Notable: The Dragons will make their ninth state trip and third in the last six years. Seniors Andrew Hastings, Lonnie Hurd and A.J. Cantrell lead a talented group determined to win.
WAELDER WILDCATS
Coach: Jarvin Hall
Record: 31-7
Playoff run: d. Leakey, 53-40; d. San Perlita, 57-54; d. Huckabay, 67-56; d. Kopperl, 62-54 (3 OT)
Notable: The last time the Wildcats made it to state was 1978, and they definitely earned the trip this year with a triple-overtime victory in the regional final. Torrey Fields and Cory Fonseca are among the scoring leaders.
BRONTE LONGHORNS
Coach: Rocky Rawls
Record: 32-3
Playoff run: d. Fort Davis, 76-38; d. Sterling City, 35-22; d. Throckmorton, 54-32; d. Ira, 50-33
Notable: Bronte made it to the tournament finals last year but fell short in a loss to Cayuga. The Longhorns are led by the brotherly tandem of 6-foot-5 Dakota Rawls and 6-foot-1 Kerwin Rawls, who also are the coach's sons.
ROXTON LIONS
Coach: Hosea Lee
Record: 25-6
Playoff run: d. Henrietta Midway, 91-71; d. Frost, 66-61; d. Saint Jo, 75-47; d. Saltillo, 73-64; d. Laneville, 72-68
Notable: Roxton is making its first trip to state, but it is led by Lee, a veteran who coached Gainesville to a state title in 2002. Athletic and lightning-quick, Roxton includes Quinton Walker, Alex Williams and Jaswon Walker.
CLASS 2A
IDALOU WILDCATS
Coach: Tyler Helms
Record: 31-1
Playoff run: d. Denver City, 81-44; d. Childress, 73-35; d. Hico, 72-51; d. Muleshoe, 76-47
Notable: Idalou breezed through its region to make its second consecutive trip to Austin. Luke Buckner and Bradley Adkins lead a balanced scoring attack for a team that averaged more than 31 points per victory in the playoffs.
HALLETTSVILLE BRAHMAS

Record: 33-4
Playoff run: d. Boling, 117-80; d. Cameron Yoe, 78-68; d. Santa Rosa, 71-47; d. San Antonio Cole, 44-37
Notable: A high-scoring team, Hallettsville has scored 90 points or more 13 times this season. The Brahmas have three major offensive contributors in Dante Haynes, Chrisitan Wood-Dvorak and Clayton O'Neill.
MELISSA CARDINALS

Record: 36-1
Playoff run: d. Holliday, 54-43; d. Brock, 44-32; d. Crawford, 57-30; d. Italy, 76-47
Notable: Melissa is making its first trip to the state tournament. Hondo Webb and Zach Helmberger are senior leaders for a team whose lone loss came in a playoff warm-up against Class 4A Dallas Woodrow Wilson.
TATUM EAGLES

Record: 31-7
Playoff run: d. New Boston, 58-43; d. Daingerfield, 68-60; d. New Waverly, 77-58; d. Crockett, 78-75
Notable: Desmond Fite and Javolick Garrett hit clutch buckets to send the regional final against Crockett in overtime, as well as in the extra period. Look for these two to shoulder the scoring load for the Eagles.
CLASS 3A
CORPUS CHRISTI WEST OSO BEARS

Record: 33-3

Notable: West Oso may be the best team few have heard about in the tournament. The Bears feature a trio of solid scorers, including Robert Watson, Willie Harper and Texas A&M-Kingsville signee Raymond Robinson.
DALLAS A. MACEO SMITH
Coach: John Burley
Record: 26-9
Playoff run: d. Prosper, 85-64; d. Van Alstyne, 78-59; d. Dallas Madison, 86-82; d. Lindale, 56-53; d. Argyle, 63-60
Notable: Maceo is the Cinderella team of the tournament in several aspects. The school will not exist next calendar year, and the team wants a state title to give the school something to cheer for. Micah Cooper is Maceo's leading scorer.
BURKBURNETT BULLDOGS
Coach: Danny Nix
Record: 32-3
Playoff run: d. Mineral Wells, 101-57; d. Kennedale, 76-71; d. Lubbock Estacado, 71-62; d. Pampa, 68-48
Notable: Burkburnett, the last time it went to state, lost to Kennedale on a last-second shot in the 2008 finals. The Bulldogs are hoping for different results this year with the help of guards Jarard Graham, Mario Garcia and Derrell Gibbs.
MEXIA BLACKCATS
Coach: Walter Smith
Record: 31-5
Playoff run: d. Tyler Chapel Hill, 50-35; d. Lufkin Hudson, 99-54; d. Sour Lake Hardin-Jefferson, 66-60; d. Athens, 60-59
Notable: Mexia's never-say-die attitude shined brightest in its regional final, as it fought back from eight down in the fourth quarter to earn a state berth. D.J. Robinson is a lights-out shooter, and Mister Carroll is a do-it-all player.
CLASS 4A
FORT WORTH ARLINGTON HEIGHTS YELLOW JACKETS

Record: 32-3
Playoff run: d. Saginaw Boswell, 85-27; d. Mansfield Summit, 44-36; d. Fort Worth Southwest, 55-52; d. Denton Ryan, 73-62; d. The Colony, 63-57
Notable: Collier is a product of legendary Fort Worth Dunbar coach Robert Hughes, and his team's up-tempo, in-your-face style is similar to the Dunbar teams of old. Marquis Jackson and Larry Clark are among the team leaders.
LA MARQUE COUGARS
Coach: Cedric Mason
Record: 32-4

Notable: La Marque, like Arlington Heights, is making its first trip to state. The team runs as Texas signee Julien Lewis goes. Keep an eye on Lewis, as well as players like Quevin Cams and DeQuentin Greer.
DALLAS KIMBALL KNIGHTS
Coach: Royce Johnson
Record: 36-3
Playoff run: d. Dallas Conrad, 73-35; d. McKinney, 78-63; d. Dallas Woodrow Wilson, 62-57; d. Bastrop, 79-49; d. Dallas Lincoln, 51-42
Notable: Kimball hasn't lost since very early in the season to Class 5A Fort Bend Hightower. North Texas-bound Jordan Williams, highly touted point forward Jarion Henry and SMU signee Jalen Jones lead the team.
CEDAR PARK TIMBERWOLVES

Record: 22-16

Notable: Cedar Park is living proof that any team can get hot at any given time. The Timberwolves opened the season 2-10 but has won 11 in a row entering the tournament. Versatile point guard Dylan Cox is headed to Army.
CLASS 5A
FLOWER MOUND MARCUS MARAUDERS

Notable: Marcus is making a return trip to state after falling in the semifinals last year. The team's top dogs all are juniors. Marcus Smart, Phil Forte and Nick Banyard all will be called upon to be offensive and defensive leaders.
FORT BEND HIGHTOWER HURRICANES

Notable: Hightower returns to Austin for the first time since 2003. The talented Hurricanes can play a frustrating style that can lull an opponent to sleep. Danuel House, Jonathon Jordan and Bralon Addison are go-to players.
GARLAND LAKEVIEW CENTENNIAL PATRIOTS

SAN ANTONIO TAFT RAIDERS
