Thoughts from FW Nolan - Muenster

TexasHoops analyst Lyndon Cook breaks down his thoughts from the 58-50 overtime win for Fort Worth Nolan Catholic over top-10 2A side Muenster.

Williams sparks Viking win

Jayden Williams took his time to get going on Tuesday night but a strong second half propelled his team to a hard fought victory over one of UIL 2A’s best teams in Muenster. Williams tallied 17 points, including a pair of sweet pull-up treys in the third quarter, and also came up with the clutch assist that ended up sending the game to OT. The 2019 guard got to the hole and created good looks for his teammates, and could’ve had a double-double if his teammates’ outside shots were falling. A Team Boost player on the Adidas circuit, he will be one to keep an eye on going into his senior summer.

Doss and Osafa-Mensah are formidable foes in the paint

TexasHoops.com’s No.103 ranked player Le’Jon Doss didn’t have his best game against a Muenster team with one of the biggest frontcourts in 2A, but showed the athleticism and toughness in finishing around the bucket that earned him the ranking in the first place. Doss and fellow inside man (4-Star football recruit) NaNa Osafa-Mensah are two very physical players and can land any opponent’s frontcourt in foul trouble, as they did Tuesday to Muenster’s posts.

Muenster still contenders in 2A

As if Muenster winning 3 straight state championships (basketball, baseball, and football) in 2017 wasn’t enough, the No.10 ranked Hornets still have a chance to make it 4 in a row as they move into 2018. The 2A defending champs are off to a rough 2-5 start, but considering their grueling schedule and the fact that they weren’t able to practice until after Christmas gives them a pass. North Texas preferred walk-on John Weger can score it with the best in the classification, and has a very big and athletic team to go around him. Weger scored 18 to lead all scorers in the matchup with Nolan, while point guard Clay Stevens went for 13. While a tough region including Big Sandy and Martins Mill awaits the Hornets, they have both the size and the skill required to make it 4 appearances at the state tournament in the past 5 years.
