Signing Day Roundup: Timme to Gonzaga, Williams signs with Louisiana Tech

Two of the highest-ranked Texas players still on the board just announced their college decisions, with Drew Timme and Cobe Williams both sharing their choices and signing LOI’s earlier this morning. Analyst Lyndon Cook has the details of their commitments, as well as implications of their decisions for the future.

Gonzaga gets their man

Drew Timme was down to 4 contenders for his signature, and this morning decided it was best for his future to take his talent to Spokane, Washington as he signed his letter of content with Gonzaga. The Richardson-based big man chose the Zags over fierce competition from Alabama, Illinois, and Texas A&M, whose coaching staff was four-deep recruiting Timme last week at the Cowtown Tip Off.

Timme signing with Gonzaga turns a good 2019 recruiting class into what is already being called one of the best in school history. Timme will join a class with a pair of other nationally ranked prospects (Brock Ravet and Anton Watson), as well as foreign import Martynas Arlauskas. Timme’s game is a definite fit for Coach Mark Few, and given his penchant for developing skilled bigs for the league, Timme must be considered the next in a long line of interior talent. He already has the mentality to succeed at the college level, and now that this decision is out of the way it’s time to just kick back and enjoy observing Timme’s game while he’s still in the state.

Williams chooses Louisiana Tech

Cobe Williams announced his college decision and then subsequently signed his LOI today, with Louisiana Tech winning the race for the Kimball PG’s signature over the likes of UT-Arlington and Northern Colorado among others. The Dallas Showtyme prospect had a huge summer and caught the eye of many college coaches, especially at the July Live Period GASO where he went head to head with some of the best guards in the state and came out with an enhanced reputation.

Williams was a very recruitable point guard from the jump. His on-court speed and toughness are game changers, and he can do things you wouldn’t expect to see a sub-6 foot guard do (block shots, offensive rebounds, etc.). He will join two former DFW standouts on the roster in Ruston in the form of Rowlett’s Oliver Powell and Lancaster’s JaColby Pemberton.
