Corpus Christi London’s Joshua Chesney has been waiting patiently like the rest of the state for basketball this summer. As the announcement was made to resume Youth Sports in the coming weeks, Chesney then decided on which summer program he would be playing for. The District 31-3A unanimous MVP will suit up for SABO out of San Antonio after a successful junior campaign.
Chesney, a member of the class of 2021 played a big role in his high school’s regional semi-finals appearance. The London Pirates went 31-5 overall in the 2019-2020 season, which included a 12-0 district-run.
“To be honest, our number one goal this year was to make the regional tournament and that’s exactly what we did,” said Chesney. “We made history at our school and even though we could have won our last game we all think of this season as a huge success and something great to build off of for next year.
“After the game, it was pretty tough at the time knowing we were right there and just had to make a couple more plays to get the job done. We were a pretty tight-knit group and I think the biggest thing we all struggled with was we weren’t going to get to play together anymore.
Chesney put up big numbers for the Pirates as he scored 19.5 points per game while grabbing 10.8 rebounds and adding 3.5 assists.
With many weeks off from the basketball court and heading into the summer months, Chesney feels that he will build off the momentum he had from the high school basketball season.
“I feel right now and this past season was the best basketball I have played. I think I really completed my game and added some parts that I was missing over last summer. I’ve gotten into the best shape that I have been in and I think it really showed this year with the numbers I put up.
During and after the season, Chesney has picked up interest and offers. The 6-foot-6, 200 pounds Chesney notes that offers have been extended to him from Arlington Baptist, Southwestern, Trinity and TLU.
He told TexasHoops.Rivals.com that he has unofficially visited Trinity, UT-Arlington, Incarnate Word, and St. Edwards.
Chesney is ready to prove himself among his peers during the upcoming months and is nowhere near making a decision, but knows what he wants in a college program.
“The biggest thing I’m looking for in a program is a great fit. I want to go somewhere that wants me as much as I want to be there regardless of what division that might be. I haven’t really made up my mind on what I want to study yet.”
Head London Coach Ron Lawver. What He Said…
“I expect Joshua to be the coach on the court and get the younger players where they need to be.
“I’ve been truly blessed to coach some amazing players. Joshua, by far has had the best IQ. He has grown up in so many ways, words can not express how proud I am of him.”
