Jordan Wood, the No.23 overall player in the upcoming FINAL TexasHoops.Rivals class of 2020 rankings committed to Howard University in Maryland D.C.
The 6-foot-8 Wood has shown a ton of upside and the Howard coaching staff is getting a skilled forward who can shoot, handle and pass.
The relationship between the staff and Wood started during the high school basketball season while Wood played for the San Antonio Cornerstone Prep National team.
“[The team] practiced at Howard while we were at the Hoop Fest in DC back in December and (head) coach Kenneth Blakeney offered me after practice,” said Wood. “I have a great relationship with the coach Blakeney and the rest of the staff and I think they’re building something special that I’d like to be apart of. I love the city and I think there’s a lot of opportunity there for me on the court.”
Wood snuck in an official visit to Howard back on March 2, 10 days before the Coronavirus restrictions went into effect.
“On my trip, I watched them practice and get ready for their game,” Said Wood. “I spent some time with a few of the players for dinner and they talked a lot about building something special and being a part of a team that works really hard and I was interested in that. The staff is young and “hungry” and they do a lot for their players and that’s what I want. And the campus is in the middle of the city so there’s a ton to do away from the court.”
Going back a year ago, Wood put together a solid weekend at the Great American Shoot-Out during the late only April NCAA Live Period for the college coaches, and Wood had a great weekend. His game did dip in June and July and his recruitment fell off. -But once Wood took the court alongside some of the state’s top players who attended Cornerstone, Wood started to blossom.
During the season, Wood learned about his game and what type of player he wanted to be, and he knows what he still needs to work on for the D1 level.
“I shoot the ball well and I feel that I am a skilled overall player. I do need to improve at rebounding, and I am always trying to work on ball handling, defending, passing, etc. I think getting my body right and conditioning at a college program will help me improve even more.”
Wood had Tulsa, Iona, San Diego among others recruiting him.
