With the high school season right around the corner, Jamal Bieniemy has his Katy Tompkins squad raring and ready to go. The No.13 player in the class of 2018 will lead one of the strongest groups of juniors in the Houston area in a push for the 19-6A district championship. Bieniemy spoke with TexasHoops.com's Lyndon Cook to talk recruitment, college options, and his thoughts on the upcoming season.
When asked if he will break into the top 10 when the next batch of 2018 rankings roll around, Bieniemy simply said, "I feel very confident I will be able to do that."
And it will be no surprise to those near Bieniemy if he does crack the top 10 considering the high ceiling his talent has. He has caught the attention of many local powers, garnering offers from Houston, Oklahoma State, and Texas A&M. Creighton, SMU, and Oklahoma have also been in to Katy this fall to watch the junior workout. The 3 offers Bieniemy has received up to this point are expected to increase dramatically with a good season.
"Oklahoma, OK State, Creighton, and SMU have been showing a lot of interest lately," Bieniemy said. "All four have come by to watch me in preseason workouts this year. I'm going to wait (to commit) until the time feels right."
Bieniemy is one of the most promising combo guard prospects in the state. His ability to create his own shot and knock down open looks set him apart from the rest in his class. Bieniemy's athleticism and finishing ability at and around the rim make him dangerous whenever the ball is in his hands. Bieniemy has a deep repertoire of dribble moves and utilizes them to maximum effect, whether creating room to get up a shot or take his man to the rack. His vision on the drive allows him to get his teammates involved for easy buckets. Bieniemy's 6-foot-5 frame makes him a matchup problem for opposing teams.
Bieniemy leads a Katy Tompkins team with high expectations for this year coming off of a bi-district appearance in the 2015-16 season. Bieniemy will have plenty of help this year, coming in the form of classmates Kristian Sjolund, CJ Washington, and Emmanuel White, as well as senior Josh Williams. Bieniemy talked about expectations for his junior season, saying:
"Our goal is to go all the way and get the job done. The chemistry is great between all of us. We have a great feel for each other's game"
