NBA, NCAA & NIT CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP
NBA 17u division had a great semi- final set of matches.
NLHA Perez vs Texas Elite –Witmer, and SSA Elite vs Dallas USA. The talented Alex Vilarino single handily took NLHA apart in transition, off the pick n roll and from deep in both corners to propel TexasElite to a 58-43 victory. Then SSA Elite and Dallas USA battled ,went back and forth with nice runs in the 2nd half but eventually it was SSA Elite’s passing game and rebounding edge making the difference in a 54-51 win.
In the NBA final, the talented Texas Elite guard duo of Alex Vilarino and Shannon Watkins were lightning fast on the break, while active defensively to get deflects and steals to win going away,76-62.
In the NCAA division, it was a semi- finals dream match up with a quick NLHA bunch narrowly getting by a smart Wichita Padres squad 64-63 while Nebraska earned top spot in the finals by drubbing Oklahoma Respect 69-60. But in this finals, D1 Nebraska proved too tough a match up, being led by a terrific future star in Garrett Snodgrass who blazed the nets to 29 points defeating the host NLHA, 64-56.
Oz Elite 15u Davis of Wichita Ks really has the best talent in the NIT division .They just literally ran through all comers to take the championship, 76-65 over KC keys 2019. Oz also won the NIT 15u trophy in April here at GASO so a big well done to them.
GASO MIDWEST TOP PERFORMERS
GASO Midwest TOP PERFORMERS July 7-10 2016
These were the top Performers I observed on display at Next Level Hoops Academy and Wichita Hoops for the Gaso Midwest NCAA Live tournament on July 7-10, 2016.
The NBA 17u division:
MVP
Alex Vilarino 6-foot-2 Texas Elite-Witmer.
Do it all guard attacking relentlessly. Good eyes to find his teammates. Nice high 3 arch too. Great finisher
Curtis Heyward 6-foot-5 OKC Storm.
The most explosive 1 on 1 player here with fast hands and motor to blaze. Spin move was his go to. Big ups. Looking at prep.
Timothy Holland 6-foot-7 THP .
The one all the top D1 schools came to see. Physically, too much for most opponents here. Big Bounce. Quick to Shot block. Can hit the open perimeter shot
Dan Venzant 5-foot-10 TX D1 Ambassadors West Texas .
Short in stature but gets in the lane at will, and flat out scores. Never stops running. Venzant went for 40 in a win Friday night.
Mikey Wykoff 6-foot-4 SSA Elite Wht.
The leader for SSA . No one played on both ends better. Good use of fakes, strong in congested traffic. Made quite an impression. Good future.
Colt Savage 6-foot-4 Oklahoma RUN PWP.
Fundamentally sound. Finishes with both hands with strong frame. Solid on short corner and wing area. Good academic kid.
Justin Engresser 6-foot-5 Colorado Lions
Scored 32 points on opening day with jump shots, pull ups, baseline work. Money at the line. No one scored in more ways. Has Western Carolina following strong. Colorado Mines. Open to move away if fits are better.
Cameron Clark 6-foot-6 SSA Elite WHT
Goggles remind me of a young Horace Grant with his smooth jumpers. Has nice passing skills on outlet and touch on hi-low action. Nice shot blocker. Was terrific in SSA getting to Sunday final.
Jaxon Simons 6-foot-2 Nebraska Select
Impossible to keep him out of the lane. Was a nice scorer with arch and rotation from 3-range too. Like his teammates all are fundamentally effective in defense and ball handling decisions.
Jeff Oxford 6-foot-1 Oklahoma Showtime
Bigtime mid-range jumper from elbow and short corners. Loves to defend with good footwork. Good student.
The NCAA 16u Division
These 10 were consistent shining with potential to be really good next high school season, and excel on main stage next spring and summer.
