DFW GASO: Team of the Weekend

Any Great American Shootout at the Duncanville Fieldhouse is sure to see its fair share of elite level performances, and this one was no different. A theme emerged this weekend of some highly recruited players making statements with their play, and those prospect are due for some well deserved recognition. Recruiting analyst Lyndon Cook names his 5 top players from the DFW GASO event to the TexasHoops "Team of the Weekend".

Jalen Lake - Texas Impact 4:13 - 2021

Watching Lake shoot the deep ball is like watching an artist go to work on a blank canvas. His shooting stroke has few peers at the high school level in regard to its smoothness and success rate. Lake shot north of 50% from behind the arc this weekend and made some nice plays in the mid-range area as Impact cruised to a title in the GASO's top division. While several other players from Impact had excellent weekends and will get recognized in further coverage from this weekend, Zhuric Phelps and DJ Jefferson to name a few, Lake's marksmanship and scoring acumen earn him the nod for the TOTW.

Shakiru Odunewu - Team FOE Elite 17u - 2021

Watching Odunewu play this weekend was a blast from the past to a simpler time when posts were the focal point of offenses and inside touches were the main route to scoring points. Odunewu was nothing short of dominant, looking more like SHAQ than Shakiru as he destroyed teams from inside the paint with his bruising style of play. He can score over either shoulder, gravitates to the ball on the offensive boards, and shoots a high percentage at the FT line. He may not be the new age trim built, finesse big that the game is seeming to trend to, but Odunewu proved that the game still has a place for big bodied bruisers as he led FOE to a 3-1 record and title game appearance.

Johnson

Chris Johnson - Houston Hoops - 2023

Johnson was nothing short of spectacular this weekend, scoring 20+ in multiple games and buzzing all around the ball making productive plays for his team. Johnson was uber-effective getting to the hole and was a force to be reckoned with in transition, airing for some impressive finishes at or above the rim. Johnson has the defensive prowess to force turnovers all over the court and quickly shuttles the ball up the court to get easy baskets. As the focal point for Hoops' NBA Red Bracket Championship team, Johnson easily makes it onto the Team of the Weekend and picked up an offer from Texas Southern to boot.

Anthony Black - 3D Empire - 2022

The hype has been building for some time for the rising junior out of Coppell, and this weekend will have only increased his stock value. Black has evolved from a slender slasher to a fully fledged wing player that can do just about everything on a basketball court. He scores it at all 3 levels, uses his length well on the defensive side of the ball, and most importantly competes in every facet of the game. There was a time when some thought his football offers might exceed the level that he would be offered to hoop at the next level; it's safe to say those times have passed as the trio of TCU, Texas, and Texas Tech all extended scholarships after a weekend of excellence for 3D Empire's standout player.

Colin Smith - Southern Assault 16u - 2022

Smith was the best player on the floor during all 3 of Southern Assault's wins this weekend, showing off an added physical edge to his game as his team went 3-0 on the weekend. Smith checks all the boxes as a scoring wing with PG instincts, a more than capable shooter from the outside that can create for teammates and himself. His ability to use his physicality to open up scoring opportunites coupled with his defending and rebounding traits put him right in the thick of things at the top of the 2022 rankings, and in this Team of the Weekend.
