Carson Murphy is a sharp-shooting combo guard that will take his chances from anywhere on the court when he gets his hands on the ball. The 5-foot-10 San Antonio MacArthur product committed to the Hilltoppers of St Edward’s and is excited about what he has seen from head coach Andre Cook.

“When I went on my visit and watched their practice it was intense and the competition level really caught my attention,” said Murphy. “The coaching staff there is amazing and they are all great coaches that run a high basketball IQ program. The way that coach Cook runs his program pushed me in that direction to commit since I come from a family that is basketball minded and St Edward’s just felt like the perfect fit.

“The program at St Ed's is very impressive. Coach Cook pushes his players to be great, and go hard at every practice. They are constantly teaching the players about the game. One of the biggest things they stress is basketball IQ and bringing energy to every practice and game. Coach Cook has already taught me some valuable things by just being able to sit back and observe him as he coaches. He is a really good guy, very funny but what I really like about him is he hates losing and he is very competitive and he won’t settle for just being good. I see a little bit of myself and my dad as well in coach Cook, and I'm very excited to get the chance to not only play for him but to continue to learn valuable things from him as well.”

Murphy has had the luxury of being part of a family that has enjoyed success in basketball. His grandfather was the head coach at Trinity Universty in San Antonio and is in the Trinity Sports Hall of Fame. His father, Mark Murphy is the head coach at MacArthur and has been there for 20 years, while his two uncles have been on the sidelines as head coaches as well.

Having played for his father, the younger Murphy has plenty of knowledge to draw from.

“I've learned that nothing is gonna be handed to you and in order for me to succeed, I have to work hard at everything and 10 times harder than anyone else,” said Murphy. “The biggest thing [my dad has] taught me over the years was to be the best player on the court and prove it to the people watching and to my opponents so when they leave the gym they say "that kid can play”.”St Edward’s is located in Austin and is a Division II program which fits perfectly for Murphy. Kyle, Carson’s older brother plays for Henderson State in Arkansas which is Division II, and Murphy has drawn from his brother’s experience from recruiting to what it takes to be a player at the Division II level.

“Watching [Kyle] allowed me to understand the commitment and the work that needed to be put in at the Division II level. Not only to be an athlete but also a student and understanding that nothing comes easy. Everyone in college on the floor can produce and are high-level basketball players.”

Murphy is the second commitment in the past week for St Edward’s. Sayvon Frye of San Antonio Marshall committed over a week ago. (Frye’s story)
