San Antonio: Tournament Wrap-up

North East/Northside ISD Player Recap
Ryan Garza Junior 5-foot-10 PG/SG Endinburg Vela

From down south, Garza is one of the top point-getters, and he brought that same mentality to San Antonio over the weekend. Garza plays fast, and when he gets out in front of the defense in transition, he is automatic. He isn't a flashy guard or an explosive athlete, but Garza is crafty. When he gets out and pushes the ball, Garza looks for his teammates streaky towards the basket and will set them up in stride. Garza isn't afraid to let it fly while his opponents trail him. He has a nice jumper that he extends to the three-point line, and he will turn the corner on finishing with a lay-in.
Ellis Jefferson SENIOR 6-foot SG/PG San Antonio Brandeis
Jefferson was up to his old tricks as a primary scorer, and he used his range to get Brandeis going in the early stages of the championship game. A Central Michigan signee, Jefferson is a sharp shooter that will be a dual threat as a scorer and a penetrating guard.
Kobe Magee JUNIOR 6-foot PG San Antonio Brandeis
Magee is a slippery point guard that needs just an inch of daylight to get to the basket. He is slender, but he plays tough and shows the confidence to score on any of his defenders. Magee weaves in and out of traffic and gets in front of the pack in transition. He is a type of guard that plays with a high motor on both ends always sticking his nose in his opponent causing turnovers.
River Reed JUNIOR 6-foot-8 PF San Antonio Reagan
From the class of 2016, Reed is among the most competitive players around. At 6-foot-8, Reed is a versatile player for the Rattlers, and takes charge on the floor as a leader and does his best to work inside and out. He continues to show that even with a thin frame, he can battle and get points against any opponent that he faces. He is willing to take the bumps and bruises that come along with the territory of being a "paint" player. He looks comfortable and has a nice feel away from the basket as a passer and as a pick and pop forward. Overall, Reed is selective on his shots and works for the best possible score.
Additional Player Notes
Phillip Medrano is capable of hitting the three for San Antonio O'Connor but also will do the dirty work inside. Medrano has shown consistency at the forward position and is a key contributor to the Panthers.
• A new addition to Brandeis, Matt McCary runs the floor and likes to set up in the corners. He is long, and when he gets the ball he will attack his defender, but he looks to hit the jumper.
• Still draining the long ball is San Antonio MacArthur' Kyle Murphy. The unsigned senior is deadly when he gets a clean look at the rim, and he has the green light to pull the trigger when he sees fit. Still, Murphy is fast in the open court and gets to the basket.
• The biggest part of William Reaford's game is his willingness to run the middle of the floor and in return he is rewarded by his guards. Raeford shows an understanding of scoring while in transition and how cutting the court in half makes him more valuable to his team and puts him in a position to score off rebounds and by slashing in front of the defense. Raeford is always in position to make a play.
• An all-purpose guard for San Antonio O'Connor is 6-foot-2 DeAndre Young. Young scores from behind the arc and off dribble penetration. He uses soft floaters and a good looking stroke from the perimeter.
St. Anthony's Tournament Player Recap
Charles Bassey FRESHMEN 6-foot-10 PF/P St Anthony's
The majority of freshman that are top in the class at this stage in the season are guards that show an advanced skill set and are starting to mature. For most big men, they will show a glimpse of what will be in the next year or two. But when Bassey steps out onto the court, it's easy to see the mature physical presence that he possesses and the talent of a senior big. When Bassey gets the ball around the rim, he explodes and finishes with one and sometimes two defenders that surround him. For his size, he is quick and moves with ease from one end of the floor to the other, and his athleticism is unmatched. There is still more to see from this first-year varsity player, as he showed an ability to stroke the three but did his damage around the paint as he hung around the lane.
Julius Nwosu SOPHOMORE 6-foot-4 PF San Antonio Madison
A powerful and springy power forward, Nwosu looks as if he disappears in a crowd, but once his opponent released the ball to shoot, Nwosu got off the floor to block a shot or grab a rebound. Drastically underside, Nwosu makes up for it by defending the paint and using his strength to gain position. A great looking athlete, Nwosu will get above the rim and finish, but most of his points come from his tough mentality and bully-like play on the offensive end.
A.J. Walker JUNIOR 6-foot-2 SG/PG St Mary's Hall
Walker is a scorer from all levels on the floor and reads the defense. He can handle the press and gets the ball up the court in a hurry, and when he sees a crack in the defense, he uses that seam as his route to the basket. Walker also shows off a quick trigger and makes his opponent adjust to his game. He will take contact and finish.
Additional Player Notes
Grey Parrish of San Antonio Madison is an intriguing post player in the class of 2016. He is long and athlete, with upside for the college level. He plays on the block and gets rebounds and put-backs.
• Another sophomore, Keishon Johnson also from San Antonio Madison is a set shooter from behind the three-point line. He will wear down his opponents as he moves along the perimeter.
Jahmar Young is a 6-foot-7 post out of Dallas Faith Family. He is wiry and runs the floor in transition. He will get on the glass and do his part to score in the paint.
• A small guard at 5-foot-8, Jordan Urbina of Los Fresnos finds himself open and will sink the three. He is quick in fast with the ball.
