GASO Daily Trio: Hill, Abercrombie & Frye Looking Toward the Live Period
The GASO Daily Trio is back, with TexasHoops.com's Lyndon Cook breaking down the games and recruitment of three top players a day from all around the state.
Today's Daily Trio takes a look at 3 names you need to know going into the Live Period GASO in July.
Marcus Hill - Texas Impact 4:13 - Dallas Jesuit - 2018
TexasHoops ANALYSIS: This spring and summer Hill has made a compelling case to be named one of the top 5 shooters in the state. Though slightly undersized, Hill more than makes up for his height with a quick release and laser focus on his shot. He can pull up from anywhere out to 25-feet and hits a high percentage of his looks. He has solid playmaking abilities and makes the right pass on offense. When Hill gets hot from outside he can carry his team at times, and has been money in the clutch in several games this year.
On the state of his game this year: "My team is so unselfish. I've never played with a more unselfish AAU team than these guys. As a shooter you've always gotta be searching for threes and open shots and my teammates do a good job finding me. I'd like to play for a D1, but it's whatever place that fits best for me"
Interest & Offers: Hill was offered as a sophomore by UTA, but during this GASO season he has one offer after visting the campus of St. Edward's. Other schools taking note of Hill include Air Force, Duquesne, Iona, Oral Roberts, Quinnipiac, St. Bonaventure, and St. Peter's.
What he's working on for the Live Period: "I've been really working on being more consistent with my shooting. Being able to handle the ball and not turn it over, because last summer I turned it over a little more than I should have. I've been trying to stay moving and always being ready to shoot on offense."
Riley Abercrombie - Sanni Hoops - Clear Lake - 2018
TexasHoops ANALYSIS: Though not with Sanni Hoops at the start of the year, Abercrombie joined up recently with high school teammate Ajare Sanni and made an immediate impact, helping carry his team to the Austin GASO Championship. The six-foot-8 Australian has a pure stroke from the outside and uses screens very effectively to get his feet set and rise up. Overall he reads the game very well and makes smart cuts to get easy buckets against defenders who overplay his shooting. He has good defensive anticipation and is not afraid to lead the break after a rebound or steal.
What he's looking forward to in July: "I came a long way since the start of the summer but I'm in the right spot now. I'm getting my opportunities and playing with a bunch of guys I get along with, just having fun right now. I'm shooting the ball really well right now, I'm in a good groove and have good teammates who give it to me whenever I'm open.
Interest & Offers: Abercrombie has already been offered by three schools; Albany, Boise State, and Incarnate Word. The main programs on his interest list include Drake, Northern Iowa, and UC-Santa Barbara, though he mentioned that a few others have contacted him.
What he's working on for the Live Period: "My main goal over all will be to put on some body weight and put on some strength. But in the mean time I just want to tighten everything up. Get my shot and my handles on point, all that."
Sayvon Frye - YIIS/Texas Future 16U - San Antonio Marshall - 2019
TexasHoops ANALYSIS: Frye has all the right tools to become an elite guard, but the one that stands out the most is his strength. Frye can bulldoze his way to the hole and finish through serious contact. He runs the break efficiently and is tough to stop in transition with a full head of steam. He is still a solid shooter and his handles get him where he needs to go. Defensively he can bully smaller guards into committing turnovers. If his showing at the Austin GASO was anything to go by, Frye can look forward to a big July with his Texas Future 16U team.
What he's looking forward to in July: "I think I've been playing at a consistent level, my shooting and handling has gotten better. I'm really looking forward to the recruiting process, playing with my team on the biggest stage in front of college coaches. I'm excited for it."
Interest & Offers: Frye has talked with coaches from Arkansas-Fort Smith, Oral Roberts, UT-RGV, and UTSA, as well as some other programs since contact was opened on June 15. No offers are on the table yet, but if Frye shows what he is capable of in the Live Period GASO that will no longer be the case.
What he's working on for the Live Period: "Just working hard with my coaches and my team, going over plays and training. Just trying to perfect my game. My off-ball and on-ball defense could both use some more work."
