Irving - Jay Wilson scored 20 points and Josh King-Walker added 11 for Denton Ryan (1-0) in their first game of the year, taking down Irving MacArthur (1-1) 52-44, Tuesday night.

The game was tied at the end of both the first and second quarter, with the Irving MacArthur Cardinals up two, 35-33 heading into the fourth. Once the fourth quarter began, the Raiders went on an 11-5 run capitalizing on transition points. Ryan held MacArthur to eight fourth-quarter points and kept the ball away from the Cardinals biggest scoring threat in senior guard Carius Key, allowing for only two points in the final quarter. Key finished with 15 for the game.

“We had an emphasis in the second half to get the ball inside and work on getting stops,” said head coach Bryce Overstreet of Ryan. “We got a few run-outs in transition that really got us going and we were pleased with the kid's effort.

“We knew that [Carius] could do more than score. We wanted the ball to go to other players for them and we did a good job of forcing him away from the ball.”

Before the game, coach Overstreet challenged his two bigs (Wilson and King-Walker) to finish with a double-double and they both did.

Wilson had 12 of his 20 points come in the second half by hitting short jumpers and throwing down four dunks.

“We fought through some adversity and we started executing some plays,” said junior forward, Wilson. “We scored off some easy layups and played hard on defense. We kept our composer and played as a team.”

Key stats…

The Denton Ryan Raiders hit 16-out-17 field goals from inside the arc as Wilson and King-Walker controlled the paint with dunks, put-backs, and rebounds.

Keep your eye on…

Denton Ryan’s junior big man Josh King-Walker showed flashes on Tuesday night as he used his 6-foot-7 frame to rebound and score around the basket. He plays with instincts and he got better as the game got longer.

Irving MacArthur sophomore combo guard Marcus Rigsby looks every bit the part of a next level player and he showed that he wouldn’t back away from shots. He finished with three points but his offensive production doesn’t take away from his upside.
