Bryan/College Station GASO: Player Capsules/Analysis

Several top teams from around the state brought their A game to the Bryan/College Station GASO, with some players making their presence known via consistent performances throughout the weekend. TexasHoops analyst Lyndon Cook goes in depth on the games of some of the standout performers from the B/CS tournament.

Nate Martin - Texas PRO 16u

Martin’s game has a strong resemblance to that of Brock Cunningham’s, with a slightly unorthodox shot that goes in at a high clip and toughness on both ends of the court. Martin was hitting shots out to the 3 and finishing through contact around the rim. Texas PRO 16’s had a solid showing at Bryan/College Station and Martin was at the heart of many positives for his team. The ceiling is high for the skilled 2020 Cy-Fair product.

Cruzzi
Cruzzi

Jociah Cruzzi - HD Toros

Cruzzi impressed me with his activity levels over the weekend, keeping the ball alive with tip-ins and put backs after crashing the glass hard. Cruzzi looked good finishing in pick-and-roll situations and has improved his touch around the hoop. Cruzzi handled business as the Toros 5-man all weekend, playing great positional defense and offering help to his guards on the drive. He capped off his standout weekend by leading his team in scoring in their come from behind win in the championship game.

Davis
Davis

Aaron Davis - Houston Cowboys

Aaron Davis has been an efficient player for Houston Cowboys so far this spring, but just might have had a breakout moment in his 37-point outburst during the Bryan/College Station GASO. Davis was unstoppable around the basket and showed some grit in fighting for offensive boards. His skill level is worth noting too, as he was able to make strong moves off the dribble and consistently knock down the 15-18 footer.

KJ Cunningham - Rudder HS

Normally running with Impact, this weekend Cunningham linked up with his HS teammates and turned in an “MVP” weekend to lead them to a title at his hometown GASO. All signs are pointing towards Cunningham’s recruitment taking off with visits to UT-Arlington and SFA this week, and it’s not hard to see why when observing his game. Cunningham showed some versatility in being able to guard 1-4, and was a force on the offensive end where he must have averaged 20 PPG thoughout the weekend. He might be the strongest combo guard in Texas, showing several times that he can out muscle any smaller guards who get in his way.

Gavino Ramos - Next Level Raiders 15u

Ramos was just too skilled for all takers at the B/CS GASO as he guided his Next Level Raiders 15u group to a championship bracket title. Ramos is lethal out to 25+ feet if left unchecked and had some tough finishes when he decided to attack the paint. He won’t burn most players for speed but Ramos is shifty and can get where he needs to go with a wide array of dribble moves or spins. He is an underrated passer and defender but it was his scoring ability that stood out the most at the tournament.
