Austin GASO: Team of the Weekend

TexasHoops recruiting analyst Lyndon Cook clocks in with his coverage of the Austin GASO, featuring 5 players who stood out in his evaluations to be named to the “Team of the Weekend.”

Chancellor White - Houston Defenders 16u - 2022

Analysis: While lots of players took awhile to find their footing or get back into the swing of things after the long COVID induced layoff, Chancellor White looked to be in mid-season form already. White's length and high skill level makes him a matchup nightmare; he has the quickness to get around bigs and the size to bully and shoot over smaller guards. While there were plenty of excellent prospects on display at the Austin GASO, very few look to have the kind of upside that White showed us over the past 3 days. He earns a spot on this weekend's TOTW after averaging 20+ points per game throughout the tournament.

Jordan Bell - Mobile Warriors (AL) - 2021

Analysis: One of the few out of state teams to make the trip were Alabama's Mobile Warriors, and they will be glad they did after the show Jordan Bell put on this weekend. Back to back games scoring a combined 63 points with most of those coming on fearsome dunks, Bell left quite the impression on the Texas players he faced. Be on the lookout for his college interest in the Lone Star State to be on a sharp uptick.

Butler

LD Butler - THP Elite 17u - 2021

Analysis: Butler has been on our radar for some time as a standout with YGC36 2021 last year and with Austin Bowie in the HS season, but announced his intent to climb up the rankings with a strong weekend at the Austin GASO. Butler shot the ball exceptionally well this weekend, getting clean looks at the basket thanks to his long arms and a high release. He is a surefire pick and pop 4-man at the next level, and ran the floor well to get easy scores for his team. His hot shooting hand and integral role in THP's 2-0 start to the weekend gets him the nod for TOTW.

Arnold
Arnold

Jake Arnold - Tx Takeover Kemp - 2021

Analysis: Arnold came into the weekend looking like he had something to prove, attacking relentlessly on offense and taking pride in his work on the defensive end. Arnold has always been a shot maker from around the outside, but his development as a driver/facilitator has made him that much more dangerous. With multiple games in double figures and a strong work rate on both ends, it's hard to look past Arnold for a spot on this weekend's TOTW.

Muhamad

Jelani Mohamed - D1 West Texas - 2021

Analysis: Every now and then at a Great American Shootout a performance comes along that everyone in the gym seems to gravitate to. Even though this time it was a socially distant gravitation, Jelani Mohamed had the first one of the 2020 GASO circuit on Friday night, dropping 6 three pointers after halftime for his D1 West Texas club in their eventual OT loss to THP Elite. The Palo Duro product has one of those pure rhythm shooting strokes and a strong athletic build to go with it. His versatility scoring the ball made him a standout over the weekend, and he will definitely be a prospect we keep an eye on out of West Texas throughout the coming months.
