ARLINGTON - Often times during the first week of the Texas High School Football season some head scratching results come in, and when two playoff teams who bring back plenty of talent a blowout is not what is expected. Such was not the case on Thursday night as Mississippi State verbal commit Chason Virgil accounted for five touchdowns in three quarters of action as the West Mesquite Wranglers (1-0) dominated the Arlington Seguin Cougars (0-1) 55-22 in the season opener for both teams at Wilemon Field. Virgil, who has started since his freshman year at West Mesquite threw four scoring passes while rushing for another touchdown to pace the West Mesquite attack.
Arlington Seguin moved the ball well most of the night only being outgaining West Mesquite 432 yards to 386 yards, but costly mistakes plagued SHS most of the night. Penalties set the Cougars offense back in the second quarter allowing West Mesquite to start a pair of scoring drives in Seguin territory. West Mesquite's Josh Butler also returned one kickoff for a touchdown and had another kick returned 93 yards to the three yard line in the third quarter, effectively eliminating any chance for a Seguin rally.
Seguin quickly jumped out on the game's opening drive moving 12 plays on 80 yards, largely behind the running of junior RB Darrian Hammonds. The drive was capped off with an eleven yard pass from Jalen Morton to Londarious Brown. That would be Seguin's only lead as West Mesquite dominated the remainder of the first half. Virgil ripped off a long run to get the WMHS offense going and shortly after he tied the game up on a twelve yard scoring pass to Akilian Butler.
After recovering a fumble in Seguin territory, West would strike again as Virgil would score from seven yards out making it 14-7. Seguin would go three and out on their next series and on the first play from scrimmage West Mesquite jumped out to a 21-7 lead as Skyler Brown dashed through the SHS secondary on a 42 yard run. The West Mesquite second quarter onslaught would continue as Virgil accounted for his third score of the half hitting Donte Coleman on a twelve yard strike and 28-7 lead at the half.
Hammonds was a bright spot for Coach Carlos Lynn 's squad as he had 234 yards from scrimmage and a pair of touchdown runs to pace the Arlington Seguin offense. West Mesquite will look to move to 2-0 on the season next week as they will host Wylie, while Seguin will look for their first win of the year as they host Carrollton Smith.
