THEOLDCOACH CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP INSIDER

Wall (15-0) vs. Cameron Yoe (14-1) Thursday 5:00pm AT&T Stadium, Arlington

Wall's domination of New Boston was a big surprise to most, the Hawks may have gone into their semi-final tilt as a slight favorite, but beating New Boston 31-3 was surprising. At halftime the score was tied at three but the Hawks exploded right out of the gate after halftime as RB Kris Gutierrez scored on scoring runs of 11 and 34 yards to give Wall an insurmountable 18-3 lead.

The Hawks never attempted a pass in the win, but QB Luke Dacy led the way with 106 yards rushing and a touchdown. Cameron Yoe for the second straight week had to rally from a halftime deficit but the Yoemen showed they can get things done as they came back for a 24-21 win over White Oak.

The Yoemen were outgained 404-182 in the win, but their defense led by LB Somari Wright stepped up and forced four turnovers which proved to be the difference. This game will be decided on tempo, Yoe will want to up the pace and take advantage of a big speed edge at the skill spots while Wall will try and slow the game down with their triple option attack. Yoe's experience on the big stage could prove to be the difference in this one.

Cisco (15-0) vs. Refugio (14-1) Thursday 8:00pm AT&T Stadium, Arlington

These two teams met in 2011 and in that meeting heavy underdog Cisco nearly pulled off a big upset of Refugio but the Bobcats held on for the win. Now the roles are reversed as Cisco has been the dominant team all year and Refugio has had to scratch and claw.

Last week Cisco blasted Leonard 55-6 behind a dominant rushing effort, the Loboes jumped out to a 42-0 lead and never looked back. QB Colton Kent and RB Mason Reed (who started on Cisco's runner up squad in 2011) have been an unstoppable 1-2 punch.

Refugio QB Travis Quintanilla also started in that win for the Bobcats in 2011 and he's been ridiculously good setting several state records for passing. He was huge last week in their 69-33 rout of Waskom on Thursday throwing for 423 yards and six touchdowns as the Bobcats racked up just under 700 yards of offense in the win. Refugio's defense will be tested by a big and physical Cisco offensive line that two years ago gave them all kinds of fits. That's going to be the difference in this one.

  • Stepp's Pick: Cisco by 8
