Huskers get their QB in Darlington

A week ago Zack Darlington made the first of what will be many trips from Apopka, Fla. to Lincoln, Neb. in order to see what the Husker program brought to the table and to get a feel for the team and coaches in general.

It was much more than he was expecting and he had a strong sense that he had found his future collegiate home.

But first, Darlington wanted to go on his team Christian mission trip to the Bahamas to make sure that his initial impression was a lasting one.

"To be honest with you, I wanted to go to Nebraska to see everything about it and I was expecting to really like it heading into the visit, but all of those expectations were blown through the roof," Darlington said about his time in Lincoln.

"I could not believe how incredibly nice everyone was up there. I could not have picked a better coaching staff, and nicer players and people, to be around. Everyone was incredible!"

It was Darlington's original plan upon returning from Nassau to take an unofficial visit to Ohio State, but he called Buckeyes assistant Tom Herman to cancel it and say he was going to sign with the Cornhuskers.

"I called and cancelled it today and I just got off the phone with Coach (Bo) Pelini," Darlington shared. "I'm officially a Nebraska Cornhusker now.

"I knew this is where God wanted me to be and my parents are 100 percent behind my decision and could not be happier."

His interaction with the NU coaches played a key part in coming to his decision.

"I spent a lot of time with Coach (Tim) Beck, Coach Pelini, Coach Ron Brown the running backs coach, and Coach (Joe) Ganz who's a grad assistant there," Darlington said.

"To get to talk ball and be able go through things with them was an amazing experience. I threw at camp and got a taste of what it would be like being coached by Coach Beck."

Though Nebraska's tradition, history and facilities were all up to par and then some, it was the relationships and intangibles surrounding the program that made NU the perfect fit for Darlington.

"There's no doubt that the football facilities and everything blew me out of the water," Darlington stated, "but more importantly I know they'll make me the man I want to be living around that coaching staff.

"I could not have chosen a better place to go to college and play football."
