Daniels has high expectations at MSU

Rick Ray wants to build his program into winners by bringing a winning mentality already instilled in the players he signs.

Travis Daniels is a perfect example of what Ray wants.

Daniels helped lead Shelton State (Ala.) Community College to a Alabama Community College Conference Championship. The Buccaneers went 22-8 behind Daniels 11.9 points and 7.2 rebounds a game as a sophomore.

"We accomplished a lot this year," Daniels said. "We had a lot of tough challenges ahead of us that we thought we couldn't achieve but we achieved them as a team. Our only goal was to go back and win state."

Although Daniels played a major role in many of Shelton's accomplishments this season, he had to rely on his teammates to finish the deal against Gadsden State in the state title game after injuring his knee.

"I got hurt in that game and was real shocked at first," Daniels said. "I didn't want to hear what my trainer had to say when he told me I tore my meniscus. I wanted to get back out there and help my team win. But they pulled it out and it was a great feeling."

The 6-foot-8, 205-pound forward is scheduled for surgery once he returns from spring break and is expected to miss four weeks.
