The spring officially tipped off for the Great American Shoot-Out as 70 teams participated in this past weekend's first of two events before hitting the summer season. Teams from all around the state showed up in Dallas as they gear up for the open period. Three teams were crowned, and the Dallas Heroes program took two out of the three championships. While Urban DFW Elite-Gilstrap veterans proved that experience pays off.

Junior guard, Tyler Melville(Plano West), says that the Heroes as a team go it together and decided not to give up in the fourth quarter in a tie ball game.

"We decided as a team that we weren't going to lose by not playing hard," said Melville.

Fatigue set in for both teams late in the game, but the Heroes dug deep and found enough energy to pull away from DFW Elite.

"It was tough playing six games this weekend. We just had to get it together and get the win."

Mellville led the Heroes in total points, but he says he didn't do it alone.

"I wanted to step up for the team, but it was everyone that helped in this championship."

Head coach, Colin Wade was proud of his squad's effort.

"We were tired," said Wade. "But we were able to play some of our players who hadn't had as much playing time which gave our starters some rest. Everyone really stepped it up."

Wade adds that winning this title is a symbol of how hard the Heroes work, but the work isn't finished for them as individuals.

"We just try to tell the players to always be ready to play. You never know when someone is watching you. Our players underdstand that this is the beginning of their senior year and that they must work hard to get the attention of college coaches."

The Dallas Heroes over the years have proven that their program is among the elite in Texas. And with two championships and one consolation win, the Heroes should continue to win throughout the up coming months.

"I am happy for everybody this weekend. It's a great organization and we as the older team want to set the example for the younger players that are a part of the Heroes program."
