MANSFIELD - The Arlington Seguin Cougars (6-3, 4-2) wrapped up their first playoff appearance since 2009 on Thursday night with an exciting and hard fought 51-37 win over a feisty Mansfield Lake Ridge Eagle (2-7, 1-5) squad at Newsom Stadium.
Seguin senior quarterback Kelton Moore continued his amazing season as he led the Cougars offense with 218 rushing yards and three touchdowns and also passing for 177 yards and a touchdown. Mansfield Lake Ridge, who may be one of the most improved teams in the DFW area led the entire first half and proved to be a tough out led by sophomore quarterback Jett Duffey who threw for 297 yards and two scores, while rushing for 107 yards and a score.
Lake Ridge took the opening kick and immediately marched right down the field taking a quick 7-0 lead on a one yard plunge by sophomore RB Duke Carter. The Eagles executed an onside kick perfectly on the ensuing kickoff but despite recovering the Eagles were unable to capitalize. After an exchange of punts, the Eagles would take a 10-0 lead on a short field goal before Seguin was able to get on the board. Moore scored his first touchdown of the night a 23 yard run to make it 10-7 and start a back and forth contest that would ensue for the remainder of the game.
Senior WR Jalyn Hernandez would haul in two first half touchdown passes from Duffey to pace the Eagles, while Seguin would get scoring runs from Moore and Ty'Vaughn Napier for their first half scoring making it 24-21 Lake Ridge. Seguin had a chance to tie the game before halftime, but a field goal was missed and LRHS held a slim three point lead at the half.
The only score of the third quarter came on a seven yard run by Nick Roberts to give the Cougars their first lead of the game at 28-24. The Cougars would extend the lead after an interception by Quinton Gale set up another short scoring drive as Napier caught a 19 yard pass from Moore making it 35-24. Lake Ridge would answer for the first time in the second half as Duffey scored on a 12 yard run to make it 35-30.
Lake Ridge had issues on the PAT as their center was not on the field, he sprinted out late but the kick attempt timing was off. The snap went high and Seguin broke through and blocked the PAT, Gale would return the loose ball the other way for two points and a 37-30 SHS lead. The Cougars failed to score on their next drive and Lake Ridge would tie it up on a sensational 32 yard scoring jaunt from Duffey who broke multiple tackles and spinned his way into the end zone.
With the game tied at 37 and Seguin's season on the line, the Cougars put together a fantastic drive answering in a big way as Isaiah Spencer capped off a championship drive for SHS with a five yard scoring run with 2:58 left giving the Cougars a 44-37 lead. Lake Ridge still had three timeouts left and a chance to go down and tie the game back up, but the Eagles fumbled giving Seguin prime position to put the game out of reach and the Cougars did just that. Facing a fourth and three on the Eagles 18, Moore put the game away with an 18 yard touchdown run to put SHS up 51-37. Gale would get his second INT of the game on the final last gasp drive for Lake Ridge to end the game and the Eagles hopes for an upset.
