Mike Treybig has been involved with football as a player or coach for more than four decades and he's ready to try something different.

Treybig has submitted his resignation as the athletic director and head football coach at Palacios effective at the end of the current school year.

"I've been doing this for 33 or 34 years and I think it's about time I do something else," Treybig said. "I talked to a bunch of coaches who were around the same age and they did it about this time."

Treybig, 55, has been a head football coach for 24 seasons and has an overall record of 136-109-1.

He has been at Palacios for eight seasons after coaching at Sweeny for six, Industrial for seven, and Houston Marian Christian for two.

"I've never stayed more than seven years at one place and I've been here for eight," Treybig said. "I get the itch to find another job. At my age, this is the last one."

Treybig helped Palacios break a 43-year playoff drought in 2007 when the Sharks advanced to the Class 3A, Division II quarterfinals.

He also led Industrial to its first playoff win in 35 years in 1995. In 1998, the Cobras beat Sealy, ending its four-year run of state titles.

Treybig had three players - Brandon Green at Industrial and Johnny Higgins and Tank Carder at Sweeny - play in the NFL.

But he's just as proud of the 27 former players that have gone on to become teachers and coaches.

Treybig was awarded the UIL Sponsor Excellence Award in 2011

Until last season, he never had a football player become ineligible because of grades during the season and that player missed only three weeks.

"I've been blessed to do what I do," he said. "It's a difficult process, but I'm excited to take the next step."

Treybig's wife, Jil, is the librarian at the junior high and his daughter Jamey coaches volleyball at the high school. He will continue to reside in Palacios.

"We'll see what happens," Treybig said. "I'm going to still do something. I'll relax a little bit and go see the grandkids."

Treybig said he expects the Palacios school district to post the position Monday and he will play no role in choosing his successor.
